Run for the Love of Dove

Summer is almost here and all I keep thinking about are my carefree days
of doing more of the things that I love.
I know, I know...the life of a teacher...
But it is a stressful job!
The summer definitely helps me de-stress
and prepare for the challenges ahead.
Nothing helps my stress level go down like volunteering.
Everything about helping others makes me breathe a little better,
sleep more soundly, and know that this world is filled with amazing people.

I can't think of a better way to kick off my summer than helping out at the 3rd Annual Run for the Love of Dove.  A benefit for the Stray Animal and Wildlife Program at Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital.  I truly wish that there weren't any stray animals, but at least they can receive the medical care that they need.

PORTLAND, Ore. — DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital hosts its third annual Run for the Love of Dove, a pet-friendly 5K run/walk, on Sunday, June 9. Race registration fees will directly support the DoveLewis Stray Animal and Wildlife Program. This year, the nonprofit emergency animal hospital hopes to raise even more funds through its online fundraising challenge, which encourages race registrants to compete to raise additional funds to support DoveLewis. The top individual fundraiser will win a brand new Ipad Mini.

“DoveLewis offers a variety of community programs, and the Stray Animal and Wildlife Program is one of the most highly utilized,” said Kate Goudschaal, DoveLewis Director of Communications. “We spend upwards of $250,000 every year caring for injured stray animals and wildlife. Every penny donated to this program goes directly towards supporting animals right here in our own backyard.”

More than 650 participants and their canine companions are expected to hit the pavement of NW Portland this year for the flat and fast 5K run/walk. The intersection of NW 19th and Raleigh in Portland will serve as both the start and finish of the pet- and family-friendly event. Post-race festivities will include food, drink, a street fair, live entertainment, fun contests and prizes.

This year, DoveLewis hopes that participants will encourage their friends and families to support them in raising additional funds through the new online fundraising challenge. Both runners and non-runners can create their own personal online fundraising pages now and compete to win a brand new Ipad Mini and other great prizes.

About the Stray Animal and Wildlife Program

More than one thousand injured strays, lost pets and wild animals come to DoveLewis from county shelters, Good Samaritans, police officers and firefighters every year. DoveLewis works in partnership with local county shelters and the Portland Audubon Society to provide 24-hour emergency stabilization and care for these animals. Operation of the Stray Animal and Wildlife Program relies on financial support from the community.

DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital, established in 1973 and based in Portland, Ore., is the only nonprofit, 24-hour emergency and intensive care unit in the region. DoveLewis provides donor-funded programs to the community, including one of the United States’ largest volunteer-based animal blood banks, a nationally recognized pet loss support program, 24-hour stabilizing care for lost, stray and wild animals and financial assistance for qualifying low-income families and abused animals.
