Goodbye Boys of Summer

http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/deadliest-catch/
Summer allows me certain luxuries...

Somethings don't change...my alarm still goes off at 5:45 am, Monday- Friday.
This is so that Murphy can have his morning play date with his furry friend, IO.  Yes..IO, named after a Greek goddess, which is extremely fitting because she is a goddess in Murphys' world. She rules.

Somethings REALLY change.

After Murphy's play date, I go back to sleep...no alarm set.

When my eyes open again, somewhere between 8, 9, or sometimes (though rare) even 10 am, I'm ready to face the world...kind of.

There are a few things to do before I can really face the world.

Coffee and my boys of summer.

Deadliest Catch.

Some people might not choose salty, scruffy, mostly older men for their "Boys of Summer" but somehow it works in my world.

I make my coffee and settle in for an episode of two of rough weather and watching them catch sea creatures that I would never eat. Blah.
But, there are so many things that you can learn from it.
And that's not just because it's on the Discovery Channel

Lessons from My Boys of Summer:
10.  Don't mess with Mother Nature.  She'll win every time, so take care and take cover.

9.  If you have an issue, deal with it.
Letting anger fester will only make things worse.  Talk about it and deal with the problem.

8.  Family:
The people that you work with are family too.  Sometimes you'll love 'em, sometimes they'll drive you crazy, but you love 'em anyway.

7.  Food.  When people are hungry, they are cranky.  Feed them.

6. Keep it clean.
Clean crab = more money.  Hmmm...this could mean so many things...You decide how to apply it.  I'm going to go clean the bathroom. :0)

5.  Watch your money.
The guys on the boats have to watch the counts on their offload of crab, otherwise they don't get paid correctly. We need to watch our numbers too and keep track of our money.  Budget and plan...oh man, that's a toughie.

4.  Stress makes people change...don't take it personal.
If you see someone stressed out, please, please don't yell at them. Geesh.  Sometimes I watch these boys and think, "Really? Really?! Is now a good time to say that?!"

3.  You can't predict the outcome.
Just like the crab counts, we can't guarantee what the future will bring, but we can control how we act.  You can be upset, but at some point you'll have to get over it.

2.  Holding on too long will create "Dead Loss."
If the crew stays out at sea too long, then the crabs in the tank will die, costing them money. The same things can be applied to issues, like hate and resentment.  If you hold on to that too long, you will create a dead heart.  No one wants that.  Plus, that will cost you WAY more than money.

1. No one is perfect.
Most of the fishermen on this show have dealt with addiction problems.  Sad. But they are very supportive of each other and try to help as best as they can.  They listen and understand. We all have our crosses to carry...why don't you just pick up the other end and help them?  Go on.  Don't curse them on their mistakes, instead celebrate their successes.  Maybe with a cupcake.  :0)

Now, if you're still reading, you should realize that the Deadliest Catch isn't just about fishing...it's so much more.
They might be salty.
They may be scruffy.
They may be rough around the edges.
But aren't we all?  :0)
Until next summer boys...until next summer.
