Raw

Raw.
Sometimes I feel raw.
Too fragile, too exposed in my emotions.
Lately I've been drawn into reading books that leave me feeling that way.
But instead of picking up something else light and happy, I again, choose raw.
But raw is fragile.
Raw is emotion.
Raw changes you.
Well, at least to me it does.

On Monday I picked up three random books.
They are random in that I had never seen them in our school library before.
Instantly I was drawn in.
You see I’m trying to find new novels for our classes.
Finding books for a class novel isn't as easy as it may seem.
The book has to be high interest, must move, and must promote deep thinking.
The second book has proven to be all of those things.
Split by Swati Avasthi

As I began reading, I was sucked into the lives of the characters.
It was almost too real.
Too raw.
But aren't those needed for true thought and reflection?
That being said, it’s not an easy read.
Abuse is never an easy topic.

I cringe and feel sick to my stomach.
Sitting here, thinking about it, I get sick again.
It’s never easy to read something that could have easily become your life,
 if things had been different.
It’s never easy to read the pain and fear that you know all too well.
Because some bruises heal quickly,
while others take much, much longer.
And there are those deep bruises that emerge
even after you thought they have healed.
“Anger is a memory never forgotten.”
(Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen)
How true that is…I’ll never forget.
And I hope with my memory, I can help others.

Watch people…I do.
I watch and listen for what’s missing.
Words not being said.
Silence.
Life not being lived…watch and you’ll see.
And when you see, don’t just stand there.
Do something.
Anything really.
But mostly ask the hard questions.
You know the ones…
I never said it was going to be easy, it never is.
But I remember those that asked me the tough questions…
The love I feel for them, lives in a very special place in my heart.
And because they asked, I’m free and whole.
So from me to you, don’t be afraid to ask.
Don’t be afraid to step in.
They are waiting for you.
Believe me, they are.
Just ask.

Need Pies for Thanksgiving?

It's that time of year again...pie time!
Of course, I like to think that pies can happen at any time of the year.  But my flavor choices get a little smaller at this time of the year since I only use products that are in-season and fresh.  I think that is what makes my pies so delicious.  Well, that and all of the love that I squish into every nook and cranny.

If you are new to my blog and my bake sales,
then you should know a couple things.

  • First, I am not a commercial bakery, all items are made in my home. I make baked goods because I LOVE to bake.
  • Second, I also ADORE dogs so all of the profits from the pies and treats are donated to Fences for Fido.
  • Thirdly, if there is something that you don't see on this list, it's because I have a modified menu of treats for Thanksgiving.  I just want to make sure everyone has pie for the holiday. But that doesn't mean that you can't ask...special orders can always be made.  :)

Vegan Orange-Cranberry Bread

Sometimes I look around my kitchen and realize that I need to go shopping.
There's not much left.
But I don't have time and I really don't want go out again when I've just gotten home.
But there's nothing.
No chocolate chips.
No chips of any kind...
So I guess cookies are out, at least chocolate chip or any kind of chip are out of question.
So what am I going to make for the fence build?

Hunting through my kitchen,
I was thinking about sweet breads...
What, or what could I make?
Then, I saw the answer...CRANBERRIES!
Thank goodness I always keep dried fruits on hand.
Once I saw the cranberries, I knew exactly what to make..
Orange-Cranberry Bread.
Delicious!

If you're like me and keep a variety of fruit on hand,
then sweet breads are a easy solution to a baking dilemma.
And to make every tummy happy,
I make it vegan.

Vegan Orange-Cranberry Bread

1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3 egg equivalent with Bob's Red Mill Egg Replacer

2 tbls vegan butter or shortening
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp orange extract
1/3 cup orange juice
1/2 cup oil

Orange Icing Ingredients:
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 tsp orange extract
water to dissolve and make glaze

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
1. Sift to combine flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a bowl.
2. Use a mixer to blend together the egg replacer, sugar, butter, vanilla, orange extract and orange juice in a medium bowl.
3. Pour wet ingredient into the dry ingredients and blend until smooth.
4. Add oil and mix well.
5. Pour batter into a well greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
6. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until a toothpick stuck into center of the cake comes out clean.
7. Let the bread cool completely before adding the orange icing.
8.Let the icing set up before slicing.
Enjoy!
This recipe is a little slice of heaven on a cold Fall morning.
That's a promise. :)
Now enjoy a glimpse of joy and a tutu or two on a Keizer Fence Build for Fences For Fido.
